About
Katya Popova is a Russian-born, Boston-based multidisciplinary artist. She received her fine arts training in Moscow, Russia, before earning her BFA in graphic design from the Rhode Island School of Design.
Katya’s performance practice began in 2013, initially exploring shadow theater and sound-based projects, and later expanding to include physical theater and puppetry. Since 2008, she has been a member of the Boston Butoh group, led by Ellen Godena (Sara June), and has participated in numerous workshops with Katsura Kan. She also participated in the Salish Sea Festival in 2022.
Over the past ten years, Katya has presented her work at various street festivals (such as Ignite and ArtBeat), shows, and galleries, including Hearing Room (Lowell, MA), Installation Space (North Adams), Somerville Museum, the Brickbottom Artist Association etc.. She has also taken part in artist residencies, including one at MASS MoCA in 2019, and collaborated on projects with the Bread and Puppet Theater, notably in their production of The Persians. Additionally, Katya was involved with Somerville Open Studios, both as a participant and as a member of the Board of Directors, contributing to the local arts community.
Since 2016, Katya has been teaching courses on visual art, design, and performance at the New England Conservatory of Music.
