“Assets for Artists” two-month residency at MASS MoCA, North Adams was a powerful experience. The following exhibit consists of the work created during the time of the residency.

I was really inspired by North Adams with its textile mill architecture and horizontality of the landscape, with its subdued, but saturated palette.

Watercolor studies of North Adams and MassMOCA architecture

During my stay, I rediscovered cardboard—an industrial material, which was left behind and recycled on MASS MoCA grounds. I started painting on its surface.

The solemn quietude of the place was astonishing. The minimalism was in the air, which inspired the following series.

The sheer scale of architectural space and MASS MoCA museum inspired thinking about sculpture, which manifested in the Durational installation-performance “Orange Drop”. Below are sketches for other ideas/experiments.

Sketch for sculpture “Endurance”. Ink on paper. Sculpture medium: paper strips, metal industrial clamp.

Sketch for sculpture “Перекати Поле”. Watercolor, pencil on paper. Sculpture medium: wire, textile strips.

The “Light” monotype print series was another attempt to express the vastness of the space and the unique feeling of light in North Adams.
